I was thoroughly addicted to WoW at one point.
Though I only play on private servers, none of the official ones. I can't afford the monthly fee.
But on the server I played, when Wrath of the Lich King came out, and the instances were working, I spent 18 hours at a time some days grinding in one instance.
It was the level 80 where you face the huge black dragon. He drops a number of Emblems of Honor, which I was collected for special gear at Dalaran.
So I kept going back in to face him, and thankfully it was bugged. He could only hit for 1-5 damage at a time. When I solo'd it, I could take him down in about 30 minutes, given that he had a couple million hit points.
With a good group, we could kill him in a few minutes flat, then run out, reset the instance, and race back in.
I collected about 700 Emblems on this method, enough to by some great gear pieces at Dalaran, along with a mount.

Only played on the private servers for a laugh, get on some of those ridiculous ones that let you be level 200, have weapons that do a million damage a shot, and other stupid crap. It was novel for a while, but there's no way I could stick it out, it just felt like I was cheating at the end of the day.
Still, being able to solo Sartharion (if that's who you mean) must've been pretty damn hilarious. I have fun soloing Onyxia, but she's not as fun as Sarthy. As a vague connection, apparently the guy who used to voice Lu Bu in the older DW games also voices Sartharion. I could definitely hear the resemblence between the two, great voice actor
The addiction can be pretty nasty, but once you get past that initial stage of "WoW is more important than sleep", you usually end up controlling it and just having a laugh.

That's the one.
All of the Northrend instances were setup like that. The mobs and bosses would only hit for a couple damage, so you could effectively solo them, though it still would go faster if you had a group.
But on the negative side, a bunch of the bosses didn't have loot tables, so you wouldn't get any gear, and some of the events weren't scripted, so you couldn't complete an instance.
This server wasn't as bad as the ones you describe. It's setup to be normal levels, but you gain XP at a rate of like 6x normal, with item drops and gold drops at about 3x normal.
One nice feature is the fact that you get double the normal talent points. So you can have a dual character.
My favorite had to be the hunter. I had one setup for Beast Mastery and Marksmanship.
I'm working to download the latest patches. The last I played here was 3.0.3, and now they are up to 3.1.0. So I have about 1100mb worth of patches to download.
There were also other problems with the server. Like some of the events wouldn't work, Heroic instances was broken, and some of the trade skills were broke. Like you couldn't get the Smelt Dark Iron ability, so any dark iron weapons were unable to be made.

Ouch, thats another thing I noticed about the private servers, usually even buggier than normal WoW, and theyre way behind on the main content. I've been through ulduar etc. with my character at the moment, but I wouldnt mind being able to run in and solo the place for craps and giggles, set up auto attack on the bosses and then go make dinner while I slowly pwn it.
That whole double talent point thing sounds cool, wouldnt mind some of the awesome DK DPS abilities to be used in my tanking spec. Never had a hunter before, though I can imagine mixing those 2 specs would = destruction

Well, I don't think they have DK fully working there.
They claim they are having trouble getting the content for the server, though I know others that have full DK's, so I think they are just slacking off.
But it's free, and it's one of the better servers. Because it's set so all the contested areas are neutral. You can turn off PvP and not worry about people ganking you, like on WoWScape. The only times PvP is forced on is in the home areas of the factions. So mainly starting areas.
It also has where Horde/Alliance can team up in instances with a party, and sometimes AoE will catch you in there if you aren't careful.
I remember once, we took a group of 20 in to Tempest Keep: The Eye, against Kaelthas and his phoenix. That battle is insane, even with dual talents, full level 70's, and members having donated for better gear. It's been unmodified, and we got wasted.
The single time we did good was on a full 80 crowd, we managed to get him to half health before we all died.

Maybe they just dont want DK's on the servers, I know a lot of them are hated - they're OP enough, and on one of these private servers with loads of extra things will just make them stupidly strong. I never complain though.. Yeah I've heard the PvP can get pretty bad on some of those servers. A friend of mine was on one, and there's often huge guilds/groups of top level rogues, who go around ambushing everyone/everything they can to halt levelling progress. I'm sure its funny the first few times.. but its gonna deter new people eventually. I love Tempest Keep, can imagine how insane it gets in the way you described it, bloody Kael'thas has beat me down a few times, even in level 80 groups. I want his phoenix mount though.. you're pretty much revered as a God if you have that on the main servers, cause it looks so damn awesome, and its so damn rare.
