I don't currently have the Empires games, so I can't speak for them, or Dynasty Warriors 5, so I don't know how the bodyguards are operated in it.
It seems to me that it would be nice if a couple more commands could be implemented for the bodyguards. I like how you can have them to defend you, run around in attack mode, or guard a specific area.
But in my eyes, it seems Koei could have taken it slightly further, and given the commander the option of commanding the bodyguards to do specific tasks if they chose, or at the very least, attempt them.
First off, the ability to set them to guarding a specific officer, through the pause menu would be easiest. Just go in, select to turn them onto a special mode, then select the name of an officer of your army on the unit list, to which they make their way to his/her side, and guard them as if they were you. If the officer should be killed, they revert back to defense mode of you, and come find you.
Another thing could be sending them on mini tasks, such as going to clear out a gate captain in a certain area.
Just my thoughts ^_^

Hm... that's interesting. I'll have to give an opinion a little later. when I'm more coherent.

I think that some Body Guards in DW5 have better costume than some characters in the game >_>

Which game is it when you can create your bodyguards?

Dynasty Warriors 4 lets you create small teams of bodyguards, but you only get to make them have Swords, Spears, Pikes, Longbows, or Crossbows. I remember in that one, I worked my butt off one time, to follow a leveling plan for my troops to get them to a specific title and such, which was pretty fun. I used the first Yellow Turban level. Menace I think. I was on Shu, and I would go to the immediate south and take the gate captain, then let my bodyguards come kill off the other 4. Then I'd have them hold position and lure other troops down to them until they had achieved sufficient kills to earn a level.
DW5 is the start of the one man bodyguard, with more options. Plus there is some guide on the Gamefaqs page that talks about how you can do things to get a specific bodyguard.

Bodyguards are a nice feature of the game, however, I hate it when you almost kill an enemy, and they just finish them before you.... ARGH!
