firstly, thanks Kumori i got the idea from your battle thing.
Now, i think it would be fun to have a dueling competition to fill in the spaces where not much happens. it gives us a chance to fight whoever and gain glory, happiness whatever.
a member of staff who isn't in the competition could decide who is the best and decide what actually happens since nobody is just going to let the other side win.

Do you what that idea has given me an idea Ok so here it goes....I will make a thread for sign up of the.....lets call it a tourniment, then once the deadline for sign ups is past I will draw up (Photoshop) a plan of who is going to battle who. So for instance there will be 3 pairs fighting each other Group1 Kumori--------- v | Yanos | Person who won in group 1 Group2|---(Who ever wins)-----v Da Qiao | Person who won in group 2 v | Cao Pi---------- Group3 Zhen Ji--------- v | Zhuge Liang | Person who won in group 3 Group4|---(Who ever wins)-----v Zhang Tong | Person who won in group 4 v | Zhou Tai------ | Do you see what im getting at?
Edit: That didnt come out the way I wanted it to...I will draw it up tomorrow.

You are thinking more like this Liu Round 1---| Round 2---|Round 5 (winner 1 vs winner 2) Round 3---| Round 4---|Round 6 (winner 3 vs winner 4) Make it Single Elimination. To win, you have to knock the opponent unconscious or get a ring out Killing disqualifies you (DB World Martial Arts Tournament anyone? xD) Possibly make each duel have a limited number of posts, for example: 10 Post Limit, meaning each character gets to make 10 posts in their duel, after both have used up their 10 (20 posts have passed) then a winner is determined by a panel of Judges. Allow 3 people to sign up as judges, they won't be able to participate with the judge character, or a sub character, to ensure fairness. The judges make the decisions on if a move is valid, if a ring out is official, etc. And Liu, I had an idea on how you can do the pairings, all you need is a temp post in the Staff Board, to use the dice coding >_> (we might wanna put it in the globals, just so it works everywhere) Just put down a list of peoples names and click the dice button beside each, what should come out is <name> <die> You change the sides of the die to the number of fighters, dice=6 means 6 fighters, dice=15 means 15 fighters. Then you take the numbers given and you place them in the slots. Round 1 = #1 vs #2 Round 2 = #3 vs #4 and so on. If some people get duplicates, leave them out and then redo the die for each, until the board is full

The exhibition will start as soon as I can get things working, should be a couple days. I'm not sure about the dueling rules, it's been awhile since I've done any of that.

I'm still feeling more then a bit new, but I think that you can just ignore my two cents if it comes to that.
Why single elimination?
I know it’s simple to organize, but the players who lose automatically are disqualified from participating anymore. This adds to competitive feeling. Which admittedly is a good in many tournaments, but in a ORPG where the point is as much to have fun building a community story as building one’s own character up, it pushes the ‘win’ as opposed to the ‘story’.
A double elimination (or even triple, though I don’t think this board has the players for that) makes it much easier to go for the interesting loss, since then you still can play to some degree. Or multiple rounds against a single opponent, since at least then you can choose to sit back and let your character do the best he(or she) feels they are capable of.
Also to address Yanos’s earlier statement: ‘since nobody is just going to let the other side win’. Why? I at least would, as long as I felt like it would make the story better. Have before, will again.
Admittedly I’m hardly perfect at it, which is why I appreciate the game having rules to deal with it when neither player backs down. When I feel that I would be the only one who’d organize a fight that my character would lose in the interest of role-playing then I rapidly lose my sense of give and take. (which has happened in far too many games) I don’t mind losing to advance character development or plot or an interesting story, but when I feel that I’m expected to lose in every point of conflict that my character enters into, the game ceases to be fun.
But a well played loss can be more fun then a mediocre win, and when both sides are on a RP high playing the loser in a given battle can be far more fun then the winner.

Not to brag, but I'm quite the expert on duelling, I had a long standing reputation for being the best duelist ever (I only ever lost once in 3 years). So yeah, I guess you could say I know a thing or two about what makes a good competition or tournament, and some of the things Lu Xun says are true. I agree with the latter half of his post, in regards to a graceful loss that adds much more entertainment value and story to a duel. Some of the best duels I've witnessed are ones that arent fought between two people who are absolutely compelled to win, and start bitching and whining whenever they start losing. A mass competitive element ultimately leads people to care more about winning than about making a good RPing scenario.
However, that said, single elimination is probably the best approach to a tournament like this, if people can accept their loss gracefully. Also, a comment on the 10 post limit - I think this is far too short, especially as the competition continues and undoubtedly the tournament becomes more serious. Perhaps for the earlier rounds this is more appropriate, but when getting to the quarter finals, semi finals, and finals, I think this restriction should be extended, if not removed altogether.
