Chapter One: Encounter
(At this point Yamato is 10 and Techi is 8)
The heavy breathing sounds of an exhausted child filled his ears, it was his own breathing and it thundered loudly which each step. Techi was near to collapsing but his fear drove him on as he continued to flee the gang of six boys that chased after him. They wanted to hurt him since he had stolen some bread from their supply within their gang hideout. Techi turned a corner to sprint down a side street but he tripped over a crack in the road and smashed his face into the dirt. He whimpered to himself as he lifted his head but the heavy foot of the gang leader, Kubo, collided against the back of his skull and squashed Techi back into the mud. “You stole our food jerk, now you’re gonna pay with your life.” Kubo hissed as he gestured for the other five boys to attack. The group kicked and punched the younger boy, drawing blood and breaking Techi’s right arm. Techi screamed and begged for mercy but the boys didn’t listen or care. They wanted Techi dead and they would do anything to achieve their goal.
Yamato strolled down the street, whistling to himself as always. He suddenly heard the cries of a young boy coming from a nearby alleyway. Yamato ran to see what was going on and he spotted a younger boy being ganged up upon. “HEY! Get away from him!” Yamato yelled, taking the attention of the gang but the gang were swift to return to beating Techi. Yamato gritted his teeth and he charged into the group, biting Kubo on the arm then throwing punch after punch into the other boys. The gang turned upon Yamato but he refused to give in and soon he proved his strength as the boys scattered like lowly dogs down the street. Kubo paused and glared at Yamato over his shoulder, cursing him forever. Kubo then fled to regroup, his fight lost.
Yamato grinned as he stood tall but he suddenly dropped to the ground and laid on his side, panting and coughing up blood. He may have won but not without a heavy cost. He gulped down his own blood but he felt too weak to get back on his feet. Techi wiped his tears away, he was badly beaten and he held his arm in grave pain. He turned and looked at the boy who had saved his life. “Thank you so much... I’m Yua, Techi.” He spoke, his voice weak and low but he smiled at the other boy. Yamato lifted his head and looked at Techi and smiled back at him. “I’m Kuan, Yamato. I’m just glad you’re safe.” He replied as he rested himself again, coughing heavily and sharply. Techi crawled over to Yamato and cuddled up against his body for warmth and comfort, he seemed to cry tears of blood which broke Yamato’s heart but he knew that the gang wouldn’t dare return. Yamato wrapped an arm around Techi and held him close, smiling softly at him.
“Yamato! Where are you boy?!” Cried a distressed merchant as he patrolled the streets, already midnight had passed and there was no sign of his son anywhere. He suddenly turned down an alleyway and he spotted his son with another boy, the two of them were lying in the mud, motionless. The merchant knelt down next to the boys, stroking his son’s head. Tears rolled down his cheeks and believed that Yamato was dead. “Fa... ther...” Came a weak whisper and Yamato raised his head, the merchant burst out into tears of joy as he pulled his son close. “I thought I had lost you... never run off like that again.” He whined loudly, cuddling Yamato tightly. Techi stirred from his sleep and looked at the man holding Yamato. Techi got to his feet and followed the merchant but the man simply ignored him. Yamato was returned home and given to the maids so he could be treated. The merchant sighed as he stood at the door, he sensed someone behind him and he spun about on the ball of his heel only to see Techi. “A street kid... You were with Yamato. What’s your name sonny?” He asked and started to believe that Techi had been the one who attacked Yamato. “I’m Techi; Yamato saved me from a gang of boys who wanted to kill me.” He replied as he winced in pain from his wounds. The merchant sighed softly and ruffled Techi’s short white hair. “Come in boy, let’s clean you up.” He spoke as he guided Techi inside to be patched up.
A month passed and soon both Yamato and Techi were fully recovered. Yamato had been delighted to hear that Techi would be living with them as his new brother. Yamato was very overjoyed by such news and took it seriously in order to protect Techi. Wherever Techi went, Yamato was swift to follow. Techi eventually settled in nicely and became well known as a very polite and caring boy among the higher ranked families of the rich and famous. Techi sat upon the stone bench in the garden under a cherry blossom tree; Yamato appeared out of the long grass and jumped on him. “RWAR! I’m a big scary tiger!” Yamato blurted as he tickled Techi, the younger male wriggled about and laughed loudly, enjoying Yamato’s games. “Can I be the tiger this time?” Techi begged and Yamato nodded, Yamato took some charcoal and drew strips on Techi’s face. “There, now you’re the big scary tiger.” Yamato yipped, pleased to see that Techi was thrilled with Yamato’s art. Techi tackled Yamato and brought the older brother to the ground and began to tickle him insanely. “Boys, come in. There’s someone I want you to meet.” Called their father, the boys sprinted back into the house but were stopped by their dad. “What have you two been doing?” He questioned as he started to wipe their faces and hands. “Filthy little rascals you are. There, now go through to the living room and say hello to your oldest brother.” The merchant spoke as he disappeared off to fetch some tea.
Yamato and Techi giggled loudly as they darted into the room where a man dressed in the finest blue silks sat upon the tiger skin chair. The man raised an eyebrow at the over-excited orphans, he truly didn’t accept them as brothers but only as trash that his father found on the street. “Quit acting like idiots and sit down.” He hissed and the two boys sulked back before sitting on the couch, they bowed their heads towards their older brother. “Brother Kyo, what’s it like to fight under Cao Cao?” Yamato squeaked, he had always found the art of war an interesting thing and he had always looked up to Cao Cao. Kyo rolled his eyes and rested his chin upon the palm of his hand. “Things are fine, but I suggest you refer to Cao Cao as Lord Cao Cao otherwise I’ll kill you for such language.” Kyo snarled in reply but Yamato merely nodded and grinned and couldn’t care less if his brother hated him. Kyo grumbled and got onto his feet then walked over to the brothers, he grabbed Techi by the throat and rolled his head around to get a good look at the latest addition to the family. He grinned as he released the terrified boy, stroking the side of his face and looking at him in such a way that struck fear into Techi’s heart. Kyo smirked as he walked away from the brothers and returned to his seat, gazing at Techi.
The father entered the room and he smiled at his three sons despite only one being of his blood. “Supper will be ready soon. I’m afraid that Kyo will have to share your room Techi unless Yamato wants to give up his room for his older brother?” He spoke but Kyo got to his feet and smiled sweetly at his father whilst approaching Techi. He placed a gentle hand upon Techi’s white hair and ruffled it slightly. “I’m certain my youngest brother won’t mind me staying in his room, I wouldn’t want to be a bother to Yamato.” He spoke, his father nodded but Techi was on the verge of crying but he felt the threatening clutch of Kyo upon his hair and he knew that he had to keep silent.
The night drove on and the family had their supper and soon retired to their rooms. Kyo carefully removed his silk clothes and folded them neatly then placed them in the drawer; he put on his night trousers and slyly watched Techi over his shoulder. The sight of the young boy made him excited, Techi was nothing like Yamato. Kyo stretched himself out before lying upon his bed; he glanced over at Techi who was snuggled under the covers of his own bed. The house was silent and Kyo thought it was the perfect time to launch his strike. He rolled out of his bed and wandered over to Techi’s bed; softly he stroked the side of the boy’s face and stirred him from his slumber. Techi lifted his head and looked at Kyo, he lowered his body in fear and he wanted to flee. “If you tell anyone then I’ll come out to kill you.” He hissed into Techi’s ear, slowly he started to nibble upon the edge of the small ear of his younger brother. He pulled back his covers and lent over Techi, pinning him so he couldn’t escape. Tenderly he trailed his tongue across Techi’s face, tasting his prey and his hands lifted Techi up and pressed him against his body.
Yamato tossed about in his bed, he sensed that something was dearly wrong about the night. He hopped out of his bed and silently crept down the corridor to Techi’s room. He pushed the door open and looked inside. His eyes widened in horror and he let out a cry that echoed through the corridors and alerted everyone in the household that danger had been discovered. The father ran down to the open door and darted inside only to find Kyo strangling Yamato and Techi lying on the bed with blood dripping from his body. “KYO!” He yelled as he grabbed his eldest son by the hair and dragged him off of Yamato, he proceeded to beat his blood son into the floor for his crimes. “I trusted you; I disown you as my son!” The merchant roared, his voice filled with pain.
The following morning Kyo was sent out on the road to never return home ever again. Techi had made a lucky escape thanks to Yamato, he only received bruises and cuts across his body but Yamato was left under intensive care. Yamato had not woken up since the attack and his body showed no reaction to anyone or anything. Techi sat at the side of his brother’s bed and not once did he leave Yamato’s side. “Please Yammy... wake up.... please.” He whined, holding Yamato’s limp hand and dreamt of the day that Yamato would squeeze his hand. Days turned into months and soon winter blew in and enshrouded the city with a thick blanket of snow, yet Techi remained next to his brother. Their father was on the verge of ordering an archer to end Yamato’s suffering as there was no sign of improvement within the boy. Techi was also losing hope; his heart was torn and hollow and feared the day of losing his dear brother. Twice now Yamato had saved him, once from death and a second from a terrible event. Techi felt his tears rolling down his cheeks and blissfully landing upon Yamato’s face. “Wake up... please...” He whispered as he fell to his knees and buried his face into the side of the bed. Fingers interlocked with his hair and gently tugged at the white strands. Techi lifted his head and gazed in awe as Yamato touched his face. “Ya... mato.” He whined as he hugged his brother and screamed loudly causing their father to burst into the room. He ran to Yamato as the weakened boy pulled a smile at his family. “Dad... Techi...” Yamato whispered as he held onto them and refused to let go.
