Up until this moment I do not think I ever realized that people here truly had ideas of changing the world for there benefit. Not like saving people or giving away there life for someone else’s. I am talking about taking someone else’s life for the gain or just becoming corrupt in general. Of course the things I have done in my life have not exactly been things I am proud of. What choice do I have though?
There are things I have to do because it is simply what I am told to do. I don’t do these things because I enjoy it, merely because someone’s life hangs in the balance… Before I get to that though I think that I should show you the events in my life. I only have one name though or what I have been named…Ember. “Another successful day huh Ember?” I had heard that statement about a million times after a task so I started to drowned it out.
Killing others, stealing goods, it came with the job description of being a bandit’s daughter. “Just another day” I said simply as I watched my feet dangle off of the docks. Sometimes I would sit there and wonder what it would be like to just once jump into the icy water, eyes shut and nothing by the water surrounds me. Someone of course interrupted my thoughts as they sat done next to me. “Oh come on have you ever had a day like this?” looking over I saw that it was Jareth; he is about my age.
Nineteen that is and he has dark black charcoal hair and his eyes are the shade of gray, somehow they still held some sort of deep emotions. I believe at the last port he had marched up to the ship and asked to join the crew, not much of a fighter but he had some sort of secret healing powers, as the others called them. Might have been why they let him on or they saw some unseen potential that I was blind to. Of course looking back at it I realized that I was blind to a lot of things. Looking up from the water I tapped my fingers against the dock.
“When you grow up like I have” I said looking at the sunset “it is”. Lightly I pulled myself up from my sitting position, I did not wait for a response, I merely just left him sitting there. He just kept sitting there partly because Jareth by my guess was not use to getting such resigned responses to a question like that. The factor that I am not much of a people person he must have calculated in sooner or later. As I finally started to walk to the ship a small creaking noise could be heard on the docks, it was rather subtle.
It would not have frightened me out as much if I would not have realized that it was not my feet making such a eerie noise. Someone was right behind me; somehow my instincts told me there was someone there. As I turned around on my heels quickly all I saw was a wisp of black and a pair of crimson eyes disappear behind another boat on the dock. My natural human instincts told me to go and look where the figure had disappeared to. Walking near the boat it had disappeared behind I looked around the corner, all there was, was the clearest of water as the moonlight hit it.
Shaking my head I thought I was just getting paranoid so I continued to lightly tred my path; hoping that nothing else would freak me out for the night. Reaching are boat I looked at it for a moment and smiled to myself. It really was a beautiful piece of work I had to admit as much as I hated that place. Beautiful finish glistened in the light, looks could always be deceiving and this ship was just that. As I walked in I could hear the sounds of glasses hitting each others which I could only come to the conclusion that the crew all ready celebrating.
Walking up to the very top I found myself speeding up, they had all ready broke out my favorite activity, dueling. It let me have sometime to try to improve any angle of my fighting skills. Walking over I nodded to the guy running it and walked into the circle that had been constructed out of boxes; so it wasn’t exactly a circle. Then a man immediately stepped out to face me, head was six feet and he appeared to tower over me his looks seemed quite threatening, a tattoo was stretched from the side of his eye to the side of his face. Men like him or so I thought were just all muscle, naturally I was already preparing myself for a easy win.
Standing there I was I was told by the man leading the tournament draw my sword. It was not like the other bandits swords, nothing about me was like the other people on this ship in the purest of honesty. It had vine like designs all around it and my grip in it was perfect, just right for me to get a handle on it. The man pulled out his sword it was better then most of them I had seen, with the hilt of the sword decorated with dragon designs. There was another nod from the man running the tournament and before I knew it I could hear the sound of metal hitting each other, the incredible pressure was evident. When I fight I feel like nothing else matters and that I am not the person people make me out to be. Each move he used his muscles were used for most of it, as I had predicted and I used what I needed to use my brain and my swift movement.
Moving with the best accuracy I could I put my right foot behind me and spun around are swords hitting, a smirk that almost looked cocky most likely played on my face. Of course the object was just for fun, you were not aloud to kill the other person there was of course no killing other crew members. In less of course they betrayed you on the job, and then they were free game. He came at me again but this time I went to left step and dodge, but he knew what I was doing. Some how he did, I barely moved my shoulder from his sword that was when I realized he had been playing me, I felt so stupid when I realized it.
Using all of my moves that I usually used against the other men which dropped just about anyone, they were not working on him. He had caught onto my game and that had started to make me mad, I wanted to win at the one thing I was convinced no one was higher then me at. This was one of the only times I felt alive, that I could feel like I was living for something more. My anger led to stupid moves during the duel and I was telling myself to pull it together. Eventually I did and I started to gain an upper hand on him using moves I did not know I could use.
He had grabbed my right arm and twisted it behind my back, I planted my feet on the ground, lightly lifting the left one; spinning out I put my sword to his throat and he at that moment knew it was over, deep and shallow breaths were released from both of us. When I heard the man shout my name and point to me I dropped my sword right there. All the sudden all the voices that had been shouting my name turned into soft whispers and they all turned into blurs like someone just throwing paint on a canvas. Waking up in nothing but darkness, I looked around…I had no idea where I was and then those eyes were there again. “Is this the one?” it said in a hissing voice as it circled me with a evil grin on is face, examining me as if I was a lovely toy to be batted around until he got tired of it.
“It would appear that way...” another voice said as it also appeared in front of me, he was dressed like the other one except for it had dark black eyes. That made the pit of my stomach turn and the eyes staring me down, like a snack made me want to run but I was just in some sort of dark place…no where to run. I felt a chill go down my spine as they both looked at me “aw the poor thing doesn't even know” the one said its red eyes shimmered with glee. Laughing the other one shook his head “of course not” he put a finger on my chin, smirking “ones like her never know...” it said with a grin playing on there face. With that he leaned in and whispered in my ear "sleep tight, the sirens call will come for you soon enough".
I heard my name being whispered a few times and when I came back I was sitting up, pale face and screaming, my chest extending and going back to normal. When I looked to see who was looking at me I realized that it was Jareth and I was sitting in his wing of the ship which as I pieced it together I realized I must of passed out after the dull; stupid, stupid, stupid. “Sorry” was all that came out of my mouth as I lay back on the pillow and closed my eyes naturally I was only at peace with myself for what appeared to be a few moments. As soon as I did those two figures came into my mind and then all the sudden I would feel frozen with fear and try not to scream again. What had made me a little more scared was that they were talking about something…something about me and something in my gut told me that was not a dream, nor with how they looked at me...what awaited me was entirely a good thing.
That some how they had gotten into my mind just to mess with me just to play little games with my head, of course I could not tell anyone anything like that after all they would all just think I was insane. “It is alright after all you’re the one that fainted on the deck” he said putting a cool rag to my head as I lay there thinking about whatever had just happened to me. “If you do not mind me asking…what happened?” I was curious partly to know who had taken me to Jareth and what had happened. “Well” Jareth said taking a deep breath and sitting at the end of the bed I was laying on “you won and then you blacked out, then you started to scream and your face turned white and then you were brought here” he said as if it was very simple. “Who...who brought me?” I said sitting up and looking up at him, after all if it was those people in the dream then I was in more trouble then I could imagine.
“Well…none of the other men could get you to settle down enough to carry you, except him” he said pointing outside and there I saw the man I had dueled with sitting there as though he was waiting for someone, possibly for me to wake up. “He said something about being your bodyguard now because you beat him, the first person to beat him actually” Jareth said giving me a smile. With that I sat at the bed and just looked around, giving the man a nod and from that moment on he treated me as though I was his daughter and I treated him as well looking back I am not sure what or why I didn't accept someone who cared for me so deeply. Sitting there I knew that there was only one thing I could do to know what was going on with me. Why these people were taking my simple dreams and turning them into horrible nightmares of fear and destruction.
Also why they had choose to strike fear into me, what had I ever done to any of them, maybe people I had robbed or people I had killed. Getting up I knew there was only one person on this ship to tell me the answers, the only one that would have a clue of what was going on, my father.
There are things I have to do because it is simply what I am told to do. I don’t do these things because I enjoy it, merely because someone’s life hangs in the balance… Before I get to that though I think that I should show you the events in my life.
