Name: Sha Kuang
Age: 32
Residence: Shandong
Appearance:
Tall and masculine, Sha Kuang is clean shaven and has sullen eyes, and his hair is like that of a square-cut mane. His chest is wide and muscular, especially his back and neck which are like corded ropes of sinew. He wears common clothes of the area he’s in, but typically it’s just a simple robe and belt, which his sword is girded and always at hand as well as a long beaded necklace. On his head there are no rich adornments save for a hardened leather strap which keeps his hair out of his face.
Personality:
A man of gigantic melancholies and also gigantic mirth. He is fond of drinking, and also fighting, but he thinks before he acts. If something is not worth fighting and dying for, he will simply give it up. He also has a great appetite for women of all sizes, but he particularly enjoys those who are well endowed. Being that as it may, he understands women very well, and is more likely to give them a gift of jewelery or perfume, rather than just money. He is an adept hunter and tracker, learning both things in his youth, and he also freely speaks his mind about things, his size usually intimidating enough to dissuade those from getting angry with him for doing so.
Weapon:
Dao; A single edged broadsword made of tempered steel, effective at chopping and sweeping opponents in a hooking manner. It’s tip can be used to thrust, but because of the curve it makes it awkward to do so and won’t pierce as deep as a straight sword would. The sword is one handed, which allows it to be paired with a shield.
Long Spear; A long bladed spear with an ashen shaft, the blade is made with high quality steel, and there are lacquered beads near the blade to prevent blood from running down the shaft. The blade of the spear has an acute edge on both sides, and is useful for thrusting and making wide slashes, however it’s weakness lies in that once inside the guard it becomes relatively useless to make any decent strikes. It’s primary effectiveness is on horseback, used as a lance, but is also effective while fighting on foot, and is light enough to be used one handed with a shield.
Ox Hide Covered Wooden Shield; A lightweight shield, made of planks of 2 mm wood glued together and then covered with a stiffened ox hide for added strength. The only metal on the shield is a central boss, used for protecting the hand and bashing towards an enemy. It’s disadvantage is that in order to make any attacks with a sword, one has to open up their guard. It is also awkward to use in very narrow spaces. The shield can stop most arrow attacks, and crossbow bolts fired from long range, but bolts fired very close would be able to pierce through it. It’s also useful for deflecting blows from swords or spears. It measures about 4 feet in diameter.
Armour:
Being that Sha Kuang primarily fights with his shield, his armour reflects that, and is relatively light. A simple conical steel helmet with an open face (save for a nose guard) is on his head, and offers good protection by causing blows to glance off, rather than absorbing the hit, and his neck is protected by a leather aventail. His shield protects all of his front, so his armour consists of only a breast and back cuirass of lacquered leather lamellar armour. It is effective at absorbing all blows that would have been dissipated by his shield, and it would even protect all but the strongest direct attacks. The shoulders are made of the same material, and offer the same protection. The armour goes down to his groin area, and his legs are kept free from armour, apart from some leather leg wrappings for freedom of movement.
History:
Born in a relatively poor village in Shandong, Sha Kuang grew up knowing both his parents for a certain time up until he was about seven years old. After that period, as he demonstrated significant intelligence and strength, he was sent to a monastery high in the mountains to train and eventually become a monk. The years passed without any significant events occurring during this time. He trained in the ways of spear, sword, and shield, and mastered hand to hand fighting. The training also consisted of being able to withstand great pains, by gradually inflicting them upon the individual, and strengthening the muscles to lift extremely great weights that an average man could only dream of doing. He became proficient in all that was taught to him, and he enjoyed every moment of his training. His parents were proud of the progress of their son, but as all things happen, in their old age they soon passed away. Sha Kuang was given leave to bury them, and watch over and care for their tomb for the expected two years of mourning. He was now 20 years old, and wanted to experience the world for himself outside the monastery. He asked for permission to leave, and it was given reluctantly, for the monks did not want to lose such a promising disciple.
During this time, Sha Kuang had wandered about the countryside, with no family he had no real form of income and there were few who were hiring. So he had to resort to other matters. He became a thief, taking for himself or even hired by those who did not have the gall to do things themselves. He was a hired blade, a slayer as it were. Many nobles wanted to get rid of their political rivals, but fearing the repercussions could not get their soldiers or any of their household to do it. So Sha Kuang was paid off to do the deed instead. He also forcibly plundered various villages with a band of reavers to get what he needed. In that time, he had made quite a name for himself, but he wished for something more meaningful to his life. It was around this time that the Yellow Turbans had begun their crusade against the government of Han. While he had been these horrible things, he had taken money from Han officials, and eaten food given to him by the Han. This was the moment he was looking for; amnesty from the Imperial Palace for helping to crush these Yellow Turban rebels.
