The quiet breeze rippled the sails and the waters were flat beneath the rising sun. A red hue was cast across the sky and stained the clouds blood red and penetrated the sea itself until it became orange. The crew lazed about on the deck and so did their captain. They had been out drifting in the waters for a few days catching fish for the markets in Hui Ji. Rui sighed as another half empty net was brought back up onto the deck leaving him dissatisfied with the conditions.
The Red Siren continued to float aimlessly through the cool waters and achieved very little with the catch. It was high noon and the skies had been blanketed with clouds which protected the pirates from the harsh sunlight for the while. Rui was dozing in his quarters before the ship suddenly jerked to the left before making a hard bank to the right. The mighty boat groaned and creaked as something just as large smashed into the side of it. Rui leapt from his bed and rushed onto the deck thinking they had hit a reef but was swiftly greeted with a far more dangerous sight.
A ship rivalling the size and beauty of the Red Siren brushed against Rui’s ship and ropes with hooks on the end were thrown onto the deck and were dragged along until they caught onto something. Once the two boats were locked by the ropes the wooden ladders and planks were pushed across to form the bridges between the two ships. Rui reacted swiftly by issuing commands to his stunned crew. “Cut those ropes and push the ladders away immediately!” Rui cried as chaos spread through the pirates as they scrambled to follow their orders.
Rui watched helplessly as the enemy pirates flooded onto his ship. It sickened Rui since the Red Siren was being defiled by unworthy feet. “GET OFF MY BABY!!” Rui roared as he drew his sword and ran towards the first wave of pirates and hacked into them without mercy. His own crew fell before the sudden assault but Rui held strong and howled like a wolf that was leading its pack into war. There was no room for the weak or cowardly in this fight. Rui was ferocious against the other pirates as he spilled their blood across the deck but Rui was being pushed back by the sheer number of men that swarmed his ship.
Rui’s stomach turned as his poor lady ship was ruined by blood and scratches. The anger in his heart ached and pushed him to continue fighting. The rest of his crew suddenly appeared from the lower levels of the ship and ripped into the enemy in much like the same fashion of their captain. “Never give in men!” Rui cried as he helped to push the enemy pirates back onto the rival ship. Though rather than allowing the other ship to escape Rui’s crew charged onto the enemy ship to finish off their prey. The tables had turned upon those who dared to rival Rui and he was going to make sure they would not escape the battle alive.
It wasn’t long until the enemy pirates laid in piles, corpses for the sea to devour as they were pushed into the water to be disposed of swiftly. Rui’s men cheered loudly and celebrated their swift victory but Rui was silent. He held a serious expression as he felt the wind against his face. Something wasn’t right... they hadn’t even begun the fight.
Rui got his men back onto their own ship and removed the ropes and ladders before sailing away but the Red Siren was met by three large pirate ships that blocked her escape. Rui gritted his teeth knowing trouble was going to strike hard and fast. He knew his crew couldn’t take on that many men and his ship was in bad condition already, another attack would sink her. “We need to retreat!” Rui commanded as the ship began turning but the other ships were fast and caught up easily. Like sharks they surrounded the Red Siren and hooked her easily, the ropes held fast and left the ship open to attack.
Rui trembled a little as the odds stacked themselves against him... he was the underdog.
The ships groaned loudly as they pressed against each other and the sounds of final screams filled the sea air. The bitter salt in the air made the open wounds ache as Rui’s crew desperately fled to the lower decks of the ship to avoid being impaled upon a sword as the predators flooded the Red Siren. Rui and his men were out manned and out of options as they were backed into a corner and awaited their deaths.
The wolves circled the lambs and desired to spill the innocent blood but a man dressed in fancy clothing stepped forward from the group and stood in front of Rui. “You have fought bravely Lord Rui of the seas, but I’m afraid it ends here with your death.” The enemy captain chuckled as he drew his sword and prepared to impale Rui through the chest. Rui blocked the strike by pushing the blade away so the captain ended up stabbing one of the pirates next to him. Rui bared his teeth and head butted the other captain and thrust his blade through the man’s guts. “No one can beat the King of the Seas!” Rui growled as he turned upon the enemy crew and threw himself into the fight and sliced and hacked into his opponents.
The fight dragged on as the bodies stacked up. Rui’s men had managed to push the enemy back up onto the deck so the fight was back where it started but neither side was in good condition. Rui had very few men left and even he himself was badly injured. Rui could barely hold his sword and he was close to passing out but the enemies continued to circle them so he remained on his toes. The enemy pirates drew closer and soon one lunged at Rui but was struck down swiftly. The second pirate leapt at the weakened captain and pushed Rui to the ground but was ripped apart by Rui’s loyal men.
Soon enough the enemy pirates decided to back off after another captain called for the retreat but one ship remained to pick the last of the meat from the Red Siren. Rui struggled to his feet and stared down his opponents before sprinting into the thick of them. He swung and twisted as he slammed his sword into the men and cut them down easily by making use of their exhaustion. He fell to his knees and left the remaining pirates to be hacked to bits by his men. The ship was stained a deep red and the water was filled with the dead as Rui’s crew pushed the pirates into the sea. The other pirate ships had already left the scene leaving the small and wounded band to float aimlessly about in the eerie green tinted waters.
Rui panted heavily as he lay on the floor and endured the sting from his wounds but at least they had won even despite the odds that had been stacked against them. Victory belonged to them and slowly the world faded from Rui’s view as he slipped into a deep sleep to recover from the battle.
