Name: Ma Chao (styled Mengqi)
Age: 21
Residence:
Appearance:
Ma Chao stands at a height of 6'1", taller than many of his age but not the goliath either. He has quite a muscular build due to his young age and extreme training as well as his experience on the battlefield. With a youthful face suitable for his age of early twenties, his complexion is rather white compared to all the time he has been out in the sun, and flawless as well, though numerous scars on his body are casualties that warriors such as he naturally suffer without much consciousness. He has a thick bundle of hair, which he has dyed pure white, and dark bushy eyebrows, though his facial hair is shaved clean. With sharp nose and large hazel eyes, Ma Chao however rarely smiles, no matter how often he can frown upon a situation.
Personallity: Filled with a warrior's pride, Ma Chao is a straightforward man who believes in making his future with his own power. A firm believer of justice and heroics, he is always intent on declaring his intentions for all to hear. His determined proclamations are not always appreciated by his listeners from his home or from rival armies since he often yells the loudest in his army. While his charisma and honesty wins him followers, his lack of foresight and planning sometimes robs them of their trust, as he sometimes neglects to consider others while completing his own personal goals.
Anything else? He hates Cao Cao.
Weapon: Stallion Fury
Stallion Fury is Ma Chao's one and only weapon of choice, his well-known and trusty spear. Consisting of a dark wooden shaft and a rather enormous blade, it is adorned with two wing-like shapes at the section where the shaft is connected to the end, built of bronze, as well a simple scarlet bundle of thread right below that, just for aesthetic purposes, and none else.
Weapon Strengths:The spear is a weapon that allows the user to attack from longer distances compared to short weapons such as swords or even daggers, thus giving the advantage. As well, it allows the wielder to attack with both ends, blade and shaft, as well as blocking with the latter. The large blade itself allows both effective impaling and easy slashing with both ends of the sharpened iron blade. Of course, the weapon itself has grown most used to Ma Chao's skilled hands, and it shows more effectiveness when provided to him.
Weapon Weaknesses: The spear does, however, hold a few flaws. First of all, it is difficult to use in close-quartered combat, as it gets in the way more often than the sword, though it can be maneuvered still. As well, it is of course heavier than other weapons due to its size and large blade.
Armour: Ma Chao's armor consists of a series of plate armor, made up of a chest plate, back plate, shoulder and thigh plates, and a collar protector. In order to give himself more versatile movement and flexibility, he has left the rest of his body unprotected with armor, though it is still covered in black cloth, his hands covered in dark gauntlets and his feet in high field boots. His armor is of little decoration, though the plates are still mostly outlined in a faint light blue and carved in with several meaningless symbols. A helmet is worn upon his head and strapped underneath his chin, heavily adorned by a large head of a tiger and a large thick bundle of white horse hair flowing out from the rear of his helmet.
History: Ma Chao, styled Mengqi, was born in Maoling County of Fufeng Prefecture in the year 168 AD, as one of mixed blood; he was half Han Chinese and half Qiang. As the son of Ma Teng, the lord in the northwest, Ma Chao followed his father in Ma Teng and Han Sui's rebellion against the Liang Government as but a teenager, not quite allowed to be too active in the fighting, but proving himself to be an outstanding warrior nonetheless, amazing many through his feat of skill as both a horseman and spearman. It was here that he received his lifelong nickname of Ma Chao the Splendid.
The Han imperial court gave separate ranks to both Ma Teng and Han Sui and had them settle in Mei County and Jincheng, respectively. A short while later, Ma Chao followed Teng once more on an assault on Chang'an, but was defeated once more. It was then that Zhong Yao, who protected the pass of Guanzhong, sent a letter to Ma Teng and Han Sui to inform them of an interest of his in forming an alliance. Strangely, Teng and Sui just then had some disagreements, and Ma Teng asked to return to the capital. The Han court summoned him back and bestowed upon him a new rank.
Meanwhile, Ma Chao, who had stayed behind alone in Xi Liang, had been recommended by Cao Cao to serve in office, but Chao, unwilling to offer his servitude to the court, filthy as he saw it, declined. However, he was eventually made a minor military officer of Sili Xiaowei, and accompanied Zhong Yao to Pingyang to fight Guo Yuan and Gao Gan. In the battle, a stray arrow hit Ma Chao on the foot, but, taking a pouch, wrapped his foot in it and resumed the fight, while his subordinate Pang De personally slew Guo Yuan. The Han court then bestowed upon him the titles of Lieutenant-General and Marquis of Duting, and ordered him to take over Ma Teng's command back in Xi Liang.
At about this time, Ma Chao contacted Han Sui, Yang Qiu, Li Kan, Cheng Yi and others, and marched on Tong Pass in a rebellion. It was here that he was named as one of the famous Eight Riders of Han Sui. However, Ma Chao was soon met by his cousin Ma Dai, who informed him that many of his family in Ye had been massacred, and it was unknown what had happened to his father. An extremely enraged Ma Chao was more than ever determined to push the rebellion onward, but unknown to Ma Chao, Cao Cao had devised a plot to drive Han Sui and him apart. Successful in his ploy, the rebellion was torn apart, and Ma Chao escaped to the west.
Marching onto the prefectures of Longxi, Ma Chao conquered several minor cities, including Jicheng, then named himself the General Who Conquers the West, proudly declaring that he was now in charge of Liang province. However, several of the officers whom he had conquered plotted against him, and several revolts arose in various areas of Longxi. Leaving Jicheng to quell these rebellions, Ma Chao then realized that the city had shut him out. With nowhere to go, Ma Chao offered his services to Liu Bei, whom he had heard many good things of.
