Quest: Law [10 Intelligence] or [10 Temperance] (Taken by Zhou Yu) Type: Normal Mod: no Difficulty: Medium Description: The law of the must be firm in these times. Show the people that you have the brains and ability to pick the innocent from the guilty. The day was winding down for Zhou Yu, it was time to go back to his manor in Wu city and get some well earned rest. He had spent the whole day riding to different towns and villages and calling for volunteers to join the Wu army under his command. He had meet with some success but not a lot the people seemed to be content as they were and he would not interfere with that. He was just leaving his last stop the town of Xin Lao when a few of the locals rushed towards him waving for him to stop. “My lord please wait we need your assistance. One of our citizens has been accused of committing a capital crime. We need your help to resolve the matter with swift justice.” One of the village elders called as they stopped just in front of his horse. Zhou Yu shock his head this was really not his business after all. “Then ask the town governor this is his affair to sort out, it is not my place to interfere.” Zhou Yu replied calmly waiting for them to get out of the way so he could go home. However the elders stayed in his path looking determined. “He cannot, he is the one making the accusation in this case the one who has been wronged. He cannot be an impartial judge. Please my lord.” The elder asked his tone pleading with Zhou Yu to help. Now Zhou Yu sat up with more interest. Although he wanted badly to go home this clearly was a matter that could not wait. If he wanted these people help he must help them first and earn their trust. “Very well assemble everyone at the town hall, I shall use it as a court house, everyone will arrive for the hearing in a half hours time.” Zhou Yu said sliding down from the saddle. This would not take long he hoped but in his experience that was rarely the case.

Court in session
Zhou Yu sat in the governor’s seat at the front of the room. Below him sat most of the town with the governor and a local villager, a young girl standing before him waiting for his judgment. The governor was smirking with unmistakable confidence the villager looked more frightened than afraid. Zhou Yu raised his hand and gestured for the governor as the party wronged to speak first.
“My lord I was at my house today when this bitch came to see me. I was just waiting for my evening meal when she came at me with a knife she tried to kill me I swear.” The governor paused to show everyone a deep cut along his left hand. “My servant here witnessed the whole thing he will vouch for me.” A young man slightly better dressed than the rest stood from the crowd and nodded that it was true. As he did so the young women accused broke down into tears. Zhou Yu was careful to note that the local people were all looking at the Governor with something resembling disgust and hatred as he spoke. This was a sign to him that something else might be going on here. “I demand as the law states she be executed immediately.” He yelled looking at his servant who drew a blade advancing on the young girl.
“Stay your hand, only I can present sentence and judgment here. Besides which I find your callousness towards this women shocking. As Governor it is your duty to look after the needs of the people to show them kindness as well as harsh law, as was said by Sun Tzu of old. I find it strange then that one of them would come to your house to attempt to kill you, I would hear her side of the story.” Zhou Yu said glaring daggers at the young servant until he returned to his seat. He made it known that anyone who tried to assault either of them again would face strict punishment from himself. He was determined now to get to the bottom of this. He waited for the young girl to speak.
“My...my lord..It’s not true. The governor demanded i come to his house. He threatened me and my family he said he would kill them unless I.....unless i spent the night with him. He tried to force himself on me so I defended myself.” She wailed before lapsing into tears again. Zhou Yu nodded to show he heard enough. He looked at the crowd to judge their reaction again, most of them seemed to be looking at her with sympathy or sorrow. The governor however jumped to his fear in outrage.
“LIES ALL LIES. My servant here saw i all i have a witness she it guilty of trying to murder me I demand justice.” He screamed the veins in his temple bulging with rage. It was clear he could not control himself for much longer. Zhou Yu frowned deeply with such anger and lack of self control he doubted the man was a good ruler for these people at all. He was about ready to announce his verdict.
“Enough I have made my decision. It seems suspicious to me that you say governor she showed up on your door step and tried to kill you. However see seems not to have succeeded a hand wound is a sign of self defence not unprovoked assault. Furthermore a good ruler would get so emotional of unset one who lets his desires and list guide him however would. Finally the wound is on your left hand. This mean it was not self defence a man raises first his right hand in defence but would use his to left restrain someone he is assaulting.” Zhou Yu said announcing his verdict to the people. There was wide spread cheering as the crowd moved to grab the governor and restrain him. Based on their reaction it was clear they suffered under his rule for a while now.
“You can’t do this I’m innocent.” He yelled in fury trying and failing to free himself from the locals that held him down. His servant soon joined him on the floor as well disarmed of his knife.
“I also pronounce your servant guilt of bearing false witness. You are both sentenced to death for your crime not to mention the many others I suspect you have committed here.” Zhou Yu sated as he stood up and walked out of the hall. The people followed him dragging the screaming criminals with them. He would leave the people to carry out the sentence himself as there law dictated and then appoint a new governor. Perhaps the village elder that had been wise enough to seek his help in the first place, the man had as much as he prevented this miscarriage of justice.
“The governors property will be sized and half his wealth given to the victims of his crimes. The rest I will take with me and use as I see fit to benefit this land as a whole.” Zhou Yu said to the masses of town’s folk as they went off cheering to carry out his sentence of death. They applauded loudly at his words as he mounted and rode off back towards Wu. Now he could finally get some sleep although at least now the day was no longer a waste of his time.
