It was the duty of every lord to hire worthy and honourable men to serve him. But it was the duty of every man to ensure the lord they took service with was also worthy and honourable. It was a took way streak however things could well go wrong when someone did not know how to take ‘no’ for an answer.
Zhou Yu sat at the bar of a local tavern, he had spent a long day composing a new piece of music to play for his friend Sun Ce. Quite the musician as well as a strategist he was well worn out and in need of a strong drink. It would not help him recover his wits but it would help him to relax, or so he had hoped. It seemed fate had other plans for him today. Three men heavily armed walked in threw the doors behind him. He ignored them after all in these times heavily armed warriors were hardly a rare site at the tavern. He tensed only when they headed in his direction and pulled up chairs at his table. Had they recognised him, he was well known for his intellect in these parts, still he had no problem with the local lord.
“You are master Zhou Yu are you not.” A rather ugly warrior asked him. It was clear his nose had been broken many times it distorted his face but also slurred his speech. Still it was clear he was the leader here or at least head bully. Zhou Yu saw no point denying it they clearly knew who he was.
“I am, although i can think of no business you might have with me.” Zhou Yu asked his hand going to the hilt of his sword under the table. He was hoping this was just a chance encounter but something about the fact they had come right to him without even ordering any drinks seemed strange. He suspects they had been looking for him.
“Our lord Xian Lao has heard about your talents. He wants to see you, so you’re coming with us to his keep now.” The mercenary said, for that was what he surly was. They must work for the local lord who clearly was seeking to obtain Zhou Yu for his collection of advisors. No doubt he wanted him for his name more than anything else. Zhou Yu sneered even if he liked this lord this was not the way things were done. The Mercenary had clearly phrased that as a demand not a request.
“If your lord wishes to seek my advice then he should surly come to see me himself rather than dragging me off to his fortified castle. He pays me no respect at all by sending his tugs to obtain me. I believe i shall refuse your generous offer.” Zhou Yu said glaring at the man daring him to try something. He could see disbelief and shock register in the mercenary’s eyes, clearly he had not expected to be refused. Instantly he could see each of the 3 men lean in towards him they looked even less friendly now.
“What our lord wants you have no right to refuse, you will come with us now.” The man snarled not getting physical yet but the threat had become obvious they were not going to take no for an answer. Any respect Zhou Yu might have had for this lord ‘Xian Lao’ had quickly fled. There was no way he could lower himself to serve such a man. Zhou Yu quickly reviewed his options making a choice now on what to do before this got out of hand in mere moments.
“Then you leave me no other alternative. I shall not suffer your arrogant tone any longer.” Zhou Yu said knocking his drink over deliberately. As he did so he stood and yanks a torch of the side of the wall. He threw the burning embers onto the table which ignited the alcohol in his drink. The entire table top burst into glorious flames. With one kick he knocked the table back towards the men and he backed up pulling his sword free. The flames spread quickly his drink spilling onto the cotton trousers of one of the men and set him on fire as well. His screams were terrible as the other men yelling oaths of rage jumped clear pulling their own weapons. Zhou Yu was already moving and had reached the door on the other side of the room. He dashed threw into the street.
“Stop him.” He heard the mercenaries yelling as they rushed after him. He waited for them behind the door. When he heard there footsteps close he turned back to the door and rammed his sword right threw the wood. It pierced the mercenary on the other side as he tried to force it open. The last man kicked the door down to bypass his dyeing friend and swung a clumsy over head blow at Zhou Yu. He side stepped neatly and slashed at the man’s throat as he went past opening up to artery inside spilling a crescendo of blood across the street. He was free for the moment then but he knew he would not get out of town easily now, the guards at the gates would never him go. Maybe he should pay this lord a visit after all.
Later that night....
Lord Xian Lao was very upset when his men failed to deliver the renowned strategist to him. He might have strung them up himself if they were not already dead. His men locked down the town and he was sure at least Zhou Yu would not get away. He would just have to play the waiting game while his men played hide and seek with him. He was an arrogant man and used to getting what he wanted right away. He would treat Zhou Yu harshly when he found him for causing so much trouble. He was angry he needed something to calm himself.
“Bring me more wine.” He yelled at a servant who promptly rushed down to the kitchen to oblige his touchy lord. Xian Lao decided to have the lad beaten if he did not return in the next minute. Quickly however wine was brought for him, he snatched it un gratefully and proceeded to down the lot in one swig.
“You really do act like a pig then, I suspected as much.” Zhou Yu said mockingly as he watched the lord take his last drink. It took a second longer for the lord who ignored all his servants and treated them like furniture to work out the young man who he had sent to fetch wine was not the same as the one to return. He jumped up hands flexed to strangle Zhou Yu but collapsed holding his belly as it contracted painfully on contact with the poisons.
“You wanted to see me I believe. But I must say I was right not to want to see you, my lord you look quite the mess I must admit.” Zhou Yu taunted the lord who tried to stand but did not make it before he vomited up blood in moments it was over. Zhou Yu did not like killing but in circumstances like this he felt no pitty for the man. He had done the local people a favour by removing him. Now also he could leave the town un troubled after all who was left to demand his presence now.
